Philip Lumbang at Awesome Academy Pop-up

When Philip Lumbang says he is going to have a one-night only art event at a downtown brewery, LA comes out to support. Last night’s Awesome Academy pop-up show was quite awesome.

If you love Lumbang’s bears, you were in heaven. There were a few little kids there, and it was fun to see them react to the artwork. Lumbang’s artwork makes people happy.

There was also beer and free entertainment that kept the crowd occupied. I was just there for the bears.

New Works by Philip Lumbang

On June 5, Awesome Academy presents new works by Philip Lumbang for one night only. The show will take place at Angel City Brewing from 6-11pm, and will feature live painting by Philip Lumbang, performances by George Watsky and Hugh the MC, and the introduction of a super-limited Awesome Ale beer. Bears and beer… I’m there!

From his artist statement:

I fell in love with the concept of the logo. The instant recognition and attachment a person has towards a single image is something incredible. These bears are calculated simplicity, they are made to make you happy. Thats what I wanted to get across with this show. The bear’s form is in the forefront, juxtaposed against a mishmash of found objects. From old palates to retired stencil board – the objects that were used as the canvas have history. Bangs, scrapes, rust, chips and a myriad of other imperfections compliment the bear’s youth and child-like demeanor – building depth into each single piece of work. Like the split second it takes to see something – process it into your mind, relate to it and critique it, this shows longevity will imitate it. Being a one day show, I wanted to get across how easy it is to make art. I am a devoted advocate of people getting together and being creative, I want this show to inspire you.
